| Summary: | This document specifies a method for determining the corrosion protection effect of atmospherically formed coating layers by means of coating resistances. It provides a guide to obtaining electrochemical measurement data using gel electrolytes on flat surfaces of zinc components and structures and zinc coatings. With sufficient experience, the gel electrolytes can also be applied to zinc alloy systems (e. g. ZnNi, ZnAl, ZnFe, ternary alloys) and conversion coatings. In this document, the aforementioned materials are referred to simplistically as zinc surfaces. Corrosion protection of zinc surfaces in the atmosphere is based on the formation of top layers of corrosion products. This document is not applicable to materials with passive coatings (e. g. stainless steels or aluminium), non-zinc based coatings and organic coatings (including those containing zinc dust and zinc flake). Only gel electrolytes prepared on the basis of agar-agar are considered. |
